Hmm… so you want to blog? Great. If you are reading this article, you are probably looking for a “Topic” for your blog. I am not going to tell you the topic, in fact, no one can tell you that. The answer lies with you. I have braced up few important things, you should consider while choosing a niche for your blog. Let’s get started.

Motivation

Blogging is all about expressing yourself, sharing your ideas and knowledge and documenting your experiences etc. The lucrative part of blogging can be making online money as well. It is a long term and continues process, and in case of lack of motivation, you may not find anything interesting to write about after few weeks.

The first question you should ask to your self is – Why I want to blog?

Is it for promoting your business, for making connections to people or your customers?
Is it for sharing your personal experiences or knowledge related to some professional
field?
Is it for making your online presence or you want to blog because everyone else is doing so?
Is it for making online money?
Is it something else that motivates you to have a blog of your own?

Your interest and knowledge areas

Internet surfers are quite demanding these days. If they don’t find anything interesting and informative in a first glance, they may leave your blog in couple of minutes, with hardly any chances of re-visiting your blog.

The second question you need to consider is – Is there anything I can write interesting and informative about, for next 12 months or longer?

Just pick a paper and pen and start writing down a checklist of your interests.

For example, here is what I like to talk and read about, in my usual day life:

  • Movies (Story, Making, Gossip etc) and Music (Just Listening)
  • My friends’ life, their work and their problems etc
  • Reading fiction (No poetry)
  • Writing diary (Yes, I write a diary, just personal stuff and daily experiences)
  • Making online money techniques
  • Web design and development
  • Forum posting and Link building

Now, my education (Graduation and Post graduation in Computer Sciences) describes my knowledge areas to some extent.

You can have a similar dissection and analysis of your interests and knowledge domain. You may end up with a list of two or more niche topics for your blog. In this case, rate each topic of yours against following list.

  • Are you actually interested in this? (Not much, Yes , I love this topic)
  • What is the topic popularity or demand? (Low, OK, Quite popular)
  • What is the Competition you may have to face in this particular niche (Not much, Oh God! huge competition)
  • Are you the authority person? Do you have enough knowledge to produce informative
and related content for your blog? (No, I’m learning, I will learn, I have been doing this for years)
  • Can you actually write in this niche on regular basis?  (I can try, No problem)
  • What could be possible update frequency of your blog? (2 posts/week, 2 posts/month)

My tips are – Be specific about you, your interest and your authority domain. Don’t blog for money. In case, you want to ask anything, feel free to comment here. I will try to answer at earliest.
