Concept of Pay-per-click was introducted by Bill Gross in 1998. It is an internet advertising model that make advertisers to pay for the clicks at their ads only. It means that advertisers do not pay for just having their ads on their host site and its free for them as long as some one would actually click that link or ad to visit advertiser’s site.
Their is another relevant term associated with this particular model. It is called cost per click or cpc. It is the amount of money an advertiser pays for a click to publisher.
CPC could be flat rate or based on bid amounts. Currently many ppc providers exist but Google adsense, yahoo search marketing and Microsoft adcenter are the biggest share holder of ppc marketing. These let the advertisers to bid against search keywords and show the relevant ads on affiliate sites on profit sharing strategy.
